Timeline of Syphon Filter events

This article lists the timeline of events in the Syphon Filter series.

Please remember:

• EVERY event MUST have a corresponding source. Irrefutable evidence will be required in the extreme right column, where the game and mission of the event is provided. Should evidence be in Zeus files or dossiers, list the document that states the event occurred. Disputed events and/or those with an unspecified timing are listed in the "Úndated events'' section. Staff members WILL consistently 'patrol' the page and events without corresponding evidenciary information WILL be deleted.
• Demarcate events which require evidence.
• Lian's timeline in particular is TERRIBLY screwed up; various game manuals have multiple contradictions about her. If in doubt, take discussions to the talk page.
• Although Syphon Filter 2 takes places literally HOURS after the first game, the characters look somewhat aged. It would be wise to ignore their pictures, and instead believe in-game events. Vince Hadden says that the Kazakhstan missile incident occurred a few hours prior, so trust the dialogue over the manual and refer to the script.
• Certain events may create retcons. For example, despite Zohar assassinating al-Hassan in The Omega Strain, Stone was implied to have executed the dictator during Dark Mirror. In such cases, go with the original version, or the earlier game. Thus, we would rely on TOS.
  • A second example is Mara being assassinated in The Omega Strain, yet in Dark Mirror she is killed along with Elsa, of whom no mention was made at all in TOS. Once again, we would trust the original source and conclude that Elsa simply went missing. We could also assume she is truly dead, but that would make little sense given her character arc.

1940's	The Krivorozhstal Mill is built in Mazyr, Belarus as part of the Stalinist grand plan to industrialise and compete with the West, but falls victim to cost cutting during Perestroika and was turned into a collective operation run by the locals. 1983	Gabe Logan receives a decoration for valour in Grenada. Zohar completes Al-Ajeef recapture. Lawrence Mujari joins fight against apartheid. Gary Stoneman, stationed in Grenada as an apparent US Special Forces soldier (but actually CIA), interrupts a highly classified DPE mission to rescue Gabe Logan. Both become friends from then on. 24 August 1984	Discovery of the Syphon Filter virus and the subsequent Investigation of Pugari Complex. Lawrence Mujari was a soldier for the African National Council fighting to liberate his allies from apartheid. Venik Smith, Shawn Dejesus and Mujari all infiltrate the Pugari South African mining corp to sabotage the facilities and liberate the indentured employees. They find that many workers were exposed to an unknown biological agent that was unearthed deep within the mines. Foreman Samuel Jones seals the sick men inside one of the mines to quarantine them and prevent an infection of healthy personnel. Mujari sets explosives to destroy the mines, which collapse. 1986	Gabe Logan undergoes US Special Forces officer training. Lawrence Mujari employed as a Junior Lab Assistant in PHARCOM Labs. Zohar assigned to Vanunu abduction. 1987	Gabe Logan assigned to Pakistani Operations. Lawrence Mujari establishes a Virginian Mortuary. Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Lian Xing meets Gabe for the first time. Gabe also has his first encounter with Benton in the country. Benton claimed to be a Central Intelligence Agency operative transporting weapons to Afghans rebelling against the Soviets, but when Gabe and Ellis escort the convoy, the Afghans attack them. Gabe gets into Kabul and meets Lian, who sets up the diversion. However, a tank gets in their way, so Gabe destroys it. He learns that Benton was supplying arms to the Soviets, and was in fact an Agency operative. 1992	Teresa Lipan joins the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Gabe Logan secures a position in Installation, joint forces training. Jonathan Phagan establishes PHARCOM and moves to New York, where Elsa Weissenger is employed as a researcher from September 1 Masson is dismissed from French Army sniper training when he is determined to have an ALA involvement. Zohar eliminates New Order Jihad. Wyn Industries becomes Pharcom and takes over entire research division. After co-founding Pharcom, Phagan established the Pharcom Exposition Center and Antiquities trust  Boris Yeltsin, along with Dr. Alibekov of Biopreparat (the civilian arm of the Soviet bioweapons program) admitted that some kind of accident had occurred at the Pharcom labs on April 2 1979 despite the Soviet government claiming the deaths were caused by intestinal anthrax from tainted meat.  The Russian government began building suburban apartments to sell on the open market, using the proceeds to build new flats in the city for needy Muscovites. 1993	William Crusher enlisted into the United States Air Force. Gary Stoneman stationed in Somalia under a CIA Special Assignment. Chechen government of Dudayev issues a declaration of full independence, leading to civil war in that republic. Several Russian-backed attempts to overthrow Dudayev failed in 1993 and 1994. 1994	Teresa Lipan, who was an operative in the ATF, is sent on a scout and recon mission somewhere in Western Montana. She has her first meeting with Gabe during this time and finds that a group of NSA agents headed by Colonel Silvers were posing as FBI to eradicate a private militia that had recovered data from a Department of Defense satellite. Gabe, as an Agency operative, saved her life, and helped her when she rescued the wife and son of the militia leader. She left the ATF and joined the Agency. Gary Stoneman stationed in Bosnia under a CIA Special Assignment. Gabe Logan receives an Agency commission. Masson meets Fournier. Zohar foils an assassination of Rabin. 1995	Teresa Lipan investigates Ebola in Zaire. Gabe Logan is involved in a Special Investigation, China. Lian Xing defects from MSS and joins the Agency. 1999	Elsa Weissenger is employed as a researcher in PHARCOM, Costa Rica. Cosa Potenza frequently involved in conflicts with the Salerno and Bonanno families concerning vice interests in Southern Italy. Dimitri's brother, Alberto Alexopolous, is killed. Markinson, head of old Agency, shuts down Pharcom and moves all bio-research into the Agency. Nikolai Jandran, who was testing Syphon Filter in Khumbu, Nepal, is forced out for some reason. He fakes his death and undergoes an identity change. Elsa Weissenger oversees production of a required chemical compound harvested from a plant in Costa Rica. Phagan hired Rhoemer, with the latter having a small army as well as underworld contacts in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Rhoemer, possessing his own endgame, seized control of the project and destroys the entire project. Lian Xing rescues Elsa Weissenger. Zohar is involved in an "Ehudim" counterterrorism activity. 23 August 1999 to 8 September 1999	Events of Syphon Filter occur. The Costa Rican incident. Gabe Logan and Lian Xing were told to infiltrate Rhoemer's operation and rendezvous with Ellis, to help him complete his mission. Edward Benton was the Agency CO and issued the order to the duo. Gabe did not question him at that time. Lian finds out from Elsa Weissenger, a lab technician, that Rhoemer was preparing a cargo transport to escape. He orders that the plantation employees be killed and loads the plane with crates full of the extract from the plants he was growing. Gabe, attempting to exact revenge on behalf of Ellis, boards Rhoemer's plane despite Benton warning him not to do so. Rhoemer was already employed by the Agency and Gabe's CO had betrayed him to acquire Syphon Filter. Gabe finds Rhoemer wearing impenetrable Agency-issued super armour, the same suit Jason Chance would later use in his duel with Logan. Using a USAS-12 automatic assault shotgun, Gabe drives Rhoemer out from the plane, but the antagonist escapes with a parachute and plots the Washington DC Attack. Investigation of Erich Rhoemer. Lian is told to liberate a group of scientists and medical technicians who Rhoemer's group had abducted. The Agency needed their knowledge to help decipher whatever the plants were being used for. Lian was also ordered to collect samples of plant materials which were being synthesised. She had to collect the data disks and destroy computers used to model the plant chemistry. First Investigation of PHARCOM Destruction of Rhoemer's Base Assault on Rhoemer's Cathedral. Gabe Logan is sent to assault the terrorist's stronghold. He finds Jonathan Phagan, imprisoned in the catacombs, has been infected with Syphon Filter. Phagan shows Gabe that Lian was in fact alive, but also infected. Mara Aramov shoots him and leaves him for dead. She then inexplicably flips allegiances, assisting Gabe and Lian to stop Rhoemer from launching a missile. 2004	The Agency is reformed into the International Presidential Consulting Agency. The Anarchiste Libertaire Armee strikes Carthage following a botched transaction between CHA director Richard Broussard and the ALA commander Soren Masson. The IPCA intervenes and renders assistance to the CHA to stop the terrorists. The defeat of the ALA results in a government crackdown that imprisons or wipes out the remnants. Gary Stoneman investigates the Cosa Nostra crime family in Italy and determines Dimitri Alexopolous is attempting to use Syphon Filter to attack rival gangs. He embarks on a short mission to neutralise the godfather leaving the mafia headless. The IPCA later investigates a steel mill in Belarus where Chechen Democratic Partizan thugs are tasked to shut down Niculescu's remaining operations. They thwart the CDP's plot and then travel to the Belaya Vezha where they further sabotage the terrorist operations. Alima Haddad is taken prisoner and assumed killed in action. Lian Xing goes to Kyrgystan where she foils a North Korean operative's attempt to purchase a bio-weapons container from Askar Saydahmat. Her termination of the various parties leaves the Yak Herder leaderless. Gabe sends a team to Yemen to investigate the CDP further with the help of the Mossad. Their efforts cause the Yemeni Liberation Authority to be overthrown and Zohar recovers weapon contracts while the IPCA acquires al-Hassan's containers. The next mission in Minsk sees the agents working with Maggie Powers of Military Intelligence Section 6. They infiltrate Jandran's labs and plant surveillance equipment while recovering the Omega Strain serum. Lawrence Mujari explains his activities in Chechnya, where he collects evidence of genocide and finds Uri Gregorav. He takes a picture of the man and liberates the hostages. The Second Destruction of the SS Lorelei occurs when Gabe Logan, striving to permanently render the vessel and all the remnants of Syphon Filter useless, commands that a team deploy nuclear devices on the foundation of the salvage rig operating in the area. This utterly decimates the entire wreck site. Lian orders a team to travel to Tokyo to capture Murukawa alive. Although they achieve most goals, the man kills himself under coercion from Mara Aramov. The IPCA also learns that Imani Grey was killed along with Yong-jun Kim and Lian is determined to recover her remains. An unsanctioned operation in Myanmar sees the IPCA squad recovering Kim's briefcase and a container with the Omega Strain while wrecking havoc on the State of Law and Order Restoration Council's activities. The team retrieves Grey's body and also finds evidence that Aramov had the plane shot down so she could acquire Kim's belongings, in exchange for allowing the rebel commander access to a handsome sum of money. Defying orders, Gabe and an IPCA group storm the Meta Global Headquarters to search it for evidence linking Niculescu to Syphon Filter. Failing to achieve this, Logan sends the agents back to headquarters and continues to raid the man's estate in Budva. Logan goes alone to Niculescu's villa estate to further investigate. He stops Mara Aramov's execution and she surrenders the location of Mikhas Ivankov's base. The IPCA then assaults the CDP military headquarters in Ukraine to stop Ivankov from launching a missile at Moscow. The SVR later moves in to dismantle the terrorist operation. The Omega Strain is cured. Mercenaries kill Mihai Niculescu for the IPCA's deletion of data from Meta Global Headquarters. Elsa Weissenger resigns from the Agency and joins Mara Aramov to continue plotting. Alima Haddad is recovered from the CDP base, mostly well albeit now wheelchair-bound. Alex Birchim is apprehended under the Homeland Security Citation for accepting bribes from Niculescu in exchange for deterring the IPCA from investigating the art collector or in any way attempting to find out more about him. 2007	Robert Cordell, anxious to seize Shen Rei and his technology before other nations can do the same, employs Ghassan al-BItar to assault the USS Mt. St. Helens. The terrorist complies. He unsuccessfully tries to gain access to cargo hold 5, where Cordell is transporting classified cargo. Cordell sends US Special Ops to stop the antagonist without telling them the truth, annihilating the entire squad. Gabe Logan is then persuaded to head on-site to stop Bitar. Dr. E is told to synthesise the vaccine so Lian can help as many villagers as possible. Meanwhile Commander Silvers, under orders from Mara Aramov, has moved up his timetable and shuts down the entire operation. He attempts to kill the Aborigines and medical personnel. 	Assassination of Qwan Tak. Lian is tasked with neutralising a puppet dictator as her first field assignment with the Chinese Ministry of State Security, and Trinidad is told to supervise her. Disputed events

• The first Syphon Filter instruction manual lists Lian as being born in California and having obtained several degrees from U.S. Universities. This is then inexplicably retconned in the Syphon Filter 2 manual in the following quotation - "Originally an agent for the Chinese MSS, she was recruited in 1996 by the Agency and given a new identity as an American citizen including fake biographical information".
• There are some conflicting dates in the instruction manuals and a mission in Logan's Shadow regarding Lian's background. Syphon Filter 2, 3 and The Omega Strain all list her as being in the Agency from 1995-2000 (though SF2 says "Present", since they were still Operatives at the time). However, Syphon Filter 2 and 3's backgrounds describe her as being recruited in 1996 while The Omega Strain claims she joined the Agency in 1995.
  • In addition, both Syphon Filter 2 and 3's books list her as being in the Chinese MSS starting in 1989 while that of The Omega Strain claims she was recruited by the MSS in 1994. On the other hand, Syphon Filter 3 depict her as already deployed on a mission for the MSS as early as 1987 when she first met Gabe in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror manual states that she was engaged with a government employment contract at the age of 17 and began her stint for the MSS before she was 20. Yet she states in her testimony to Vince Hadden that she was on an assignment for the MSS.  In Logan's Shadow, the briefing for a bonus mission says Lian completed her first mission for the MSS in 1992, completely contradicting SF3.
